Verifying Microchips
This guide explains how to check whether a dog’s microchip is valid and properly registered. In Ireland, there are four official and licensed microchip databases.
When must a dog be microchipped and registered?
-
It is being sold (online or offline), or
-
It is over 12 weeks old.
A dog must be microchipped and registered if:
-
A microchip number is always 15 digits long with no letters or symbols. Some forms may show three extra digits, but only the first 15 are needed for checking.
Ad Posting Rules
When you post an advert on www.loveapet.ie, you agree to follow these rules:
General
-
All ads are non-refundable once published.
-
You must upload real photos of your dog(s) and provide accurate information (breed, age, etc.).
-
All dogs must be physically located in Ireland and in good health.
Ownership & Microchipping
-
You must be the legal owner of the dog(s), and they must be registered in your name.
-
You must provide microchip numbers for every dog and have the microchip certificates available.
-
All dogs must be microchipped and registered with an approved database.
Approved databases:
-
Republic of Ireland: IKC, ICC, Fido, or Animark
-
Northern Ireland: One of the databases connected to check-a-chip.co.uk
Age Requirements
-
Dogs must be at least 7 weeks old to be advertised.
-
Dogs must be over 8 weeks old before they can leave their mother.
-
Stud dogs must be over 12 months old.
-
Pregnant or whelping bitches cannot be advertised.
Licensing Requirements
Republic of Ireland
-
If you sell 6 or more dogs in a year, you must register with the Department of Agriculture as a Registered Seller of Pets and include this ID in all ads.
-
If you keep 6 or more female dogs over six months of age that are capable of breeding, you must register as a Dog Breeding Establishment (DBE) with your local authority. Your DBE licence number must appear in all ads.
Northern Ireland
-
You must provide a breeding licence from your local council if you keep 3 or more breeding bitches and any of the following apply:
-
You supply 3 or more litters in a 12-month period.
-
You advertise 3 or more litters for sale in a 12-month period.
-
You advertise yourself as a business that breeds or sells puppies.
Restrictions
-
Ads for dogs with cropped ears are not allowed, even if the procedure is legal elsewhere.
-
Ads for dogs with docked tails or claw removal require a veterinary attestation confirming the procedure complies with the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, Section 16.
-
The minimum price for dogs is €50. “Free to a good home” ads are not permitted.
-
You must be 18 or older to post an ad or contact sellers on the site.
Love A Pet Rights
-
We may edit ads for clarity.
-
We may refuse any ad at our discretion.
Checking a Microchip on EuroPetNet
EuroPetNet.com is a Europe-wide system that helps identify lost pets. The four Irish databases send their information to EuroPetNet every day, so most registered chips will appear there.
Why a microchip might not show up:
-
The 15-digit number was entered incorrectly.
-
The registration paperwork was only recently submitted and hasn’t been processed yet (especially if the vet posted the forms).
-
The chip is registered with a database not connected to EuroPetNet.
Important: It is illegal to advertise a dog for sale unless it is fully registered in a database. Microchipping alone is not enough — registration is required by law.
Checking Directly With the Databases
Each Irish database also has its own tool for checking microchips. Often, the chip will appear in these tools before it shows up on EuroPetNet.
If the chip does not appear in the database’s own checker, it means it is not fully registered, and selling the dog would be illegal.
Verification tools:
-
Animark — https://animark.ie/chip-search
The databases upload information to EuroPetNet at different times, so updates may not appear immediately.
Getting the Microchip Certificate
When you buy a dog, the most important document you should receive is the microchip certificate.
This certificate includes instructions for transferring ownership to you. By law, the seller must:
-
Check your photo ID
-
Confirm your address with a recent utility bill
What’s on a Microchip Certificate?
Certificates from Fido and Animark are good examples. They usually include:
-
The microchip number and details
-
Dog information (breed, date of birth, sex, colour, etc.)
-
Owner information (name, address, phone, email)
-
Details of the person who implanted the chip
Vet Check
It is highly recommended that your vet confirms the chip number in the certificate matches the chip implanted in your dog during your first visit.
You should bring your new dog to a vet within the first few days.
7. Updates to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last Updated” date.
